Genital candidiasis

The fungus that already lives on the body, and why it sometimes overgrows.

Candida is a fungus that normally lives on the skin and mucous membranes without causing trouble. Genital candidiasis shows up when something breaks that balance — antibiotics, hormonal changes, persistent moisture — and the fungus grows past its usual limits.

We explain why it is not a sexually transmitted infection in the strict sense even though it can follow sexual activity, what sets it apart from other causes of discharge or itching, and why repeated episodes deserve a closer look.
