Kinesin
The protein that walks inside the cell, and why its failure disconnects neurons.
Inside every cell there is a network of «rails» — the microtubules — along which cargo moves: vesicles, organelles, proteins. Kinesin is the molecular motor that walks along those rails, literally step by step, burning ATP with every move.
We explain how that transport works, why it matters most in neurons — where cargo travels enormous distances from the cell body to the far end of the axon — and which neurodegenerative diseases have been linked to failures in this transport system.
